How have you navigated disruptions in your in- dustry to remain a top professional? When pushing the envelope to excel, it’s only amat- ter of time before you get knocked down. When this happens, laying blame and making accusations is a waste of time; all that matters is how quick- ly you can get up again. This requires rethinking practices to either make significant changes or walk away. Literally, know when to hold and play ‘em, and know when to fold ‘em. Standing by your principals will not only main- tain the respect of colleagues in the field; it will attract new players onto the field. What are two key behaviors that allow you to be effective in your role? The two key behaviors for environmental advocacy and problem solving are inclu- sive conversations instead of messaging, and collaborative coalition building instead of individual leadership. Behav- iors are showing respect by calling individuals by name and complimentary small talk in a collegial manner to find common ground. Listen and indicate you’ve heard the specifics. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry right now? The industry’s biggest challenge is linear thinking that results in entrenched attitudes of “I’m right because I know better,” and “you’re wrong because you don’t.” Environmental problems are vastly more complex and involve living ecosystems that are self-organizing. How do you feel your industry has changed/ evolved over time? Building a foundation of respectful relationships continues to be the bedrock of the industry. Be generous and it will come back in support, often in unexpected ways. Social media has made it possible to reach out to thousands more people, including those who brag about signing the most petitions in the least amount of time. Quantity has gone up at the expense of quality. We re- store quality with conversa- tions by inviting and editing comments. Decision-makers are no longer interested in the number of signers. In- stead, they are compliment- ed when individuals take the time to write personal comments. With the barrage of electronic verbiage, good writing takes on a new ur- gency. Write thoughtfully, people will read it, and you’ll be rewarded by meaningful conversations. What new innovations or technologies do you feel will shape the future of your industry? Citizen Science through questioning, observing, recording, and communicating. Also, the Ocean Portal. What excites you most about your industry? Complexity, discovery, inclusive solutions, teamwork, and always learning. Also, emerging humanism in concert with nature. Most of all, it’s the relationships made along the way. Relation- ships with people and with nature. Second Edition | Marquis Who ’ s Who Insight 9 “ Building a foundation of respectful relation- ships continues to be the bedrock of the industry.
