Remaining fluid and receptive is important. The world has changed in a lot of ways and some people are not willing to change as well. That’s a big problem at the moment. How do you feel your industry has changed/evolved over time? Not a whole lot has changed. We are living in a more digital world, but that’s not a bad thing. What excites you the most about your industry? The idea of contributing to the health of children is always an exciting prospect. I started at age 15 in an all-male profession. My father did not approve, although he had an MD and a PhD, and my whole family thought he was right. In other words, I have been a disrupter all my life. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry right now? Funding, grants and money. Do you know the probability of being a funded female principle investigator? One out of 100. How do we overcome this? We have to write the best grant we possibly can and talk to people — make connections and do homework. What excites you the most about your industry? I am a data person, and to be among the top echelon of people who have their data considered is probably the most important thing. You learn from your peer group because you cannot personally cover all the data. International meetings draw out the best in my field. You get to see what other people are doing and how they are handling data. The fact is, you have to get together and share. This is what the Royal Society does to open all those doors.
