I think that the ideas involved with these things should really be considered. How have you navigated disruptions in your industry to remain a top professional? By remaining interested in my profession. I like to teach, and intellectual life is very important for me. I taught 20 th -century French philosophy. What are two key behaviors/personality traits that allow you to be effective in your role? The first thing is that I love to teach, and students seem to enjoy my classes. I’ve received letters of thanks over the years, which has been particularly rewarding. Also, I have a likable personality, so I don’t have any enemies. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry right now? If we are talking about research and teaching and so forth, it’s really a matter of whether the fine arts still have the significance that they used to, and by the fine arts, I mean philosophy. Departments are changing a little bit in their composition, and I am not sure if that it’s going to be a lasting change. For those of us who have worked over the years in certain aspects of philosophy education, we have been affected by these changes. How do you feel your industry has changed/evolved over time? Philosophy has become more and more involved with social science. If you analyze social science, you will see that it’s much more related to current events. I’m not saying that I don’t believe in what’s going on right now, but theories about philosophy are more complex than just talking about recent things that are happening. What new innovations or technologies do you feel will shape the future of your industry? It’s important to have respect for history and not just celebrate the most relevant or recent phenomenon. What excites you the most about your industry? Ideas. That may sound a little bit irrelevant.
