When many people look at sole practitioners, they think we’re dinosaurs. I can tell you that in the suburbs, there are a lot of small practices with one or two. I think it’s too hard to prac- tice that way in the city. You need to have contacts with other law- yers to get business. What excites you the most about your industry? I found myself working on criminal cases when I first started as a pub- lic defender. That was interesting, because that’s the kind of thing movies are made about. I wouldn’t say it’s fun, but it’s exciting. The thing I liked the most was cross-examining a witness. Tear- ing apart a person’s case on cross-examination was more en- joyable than putting the case to- gether piece by piece. I thought I developed a skill that made me confident when I was cross-ex- amining. When I first started lecturing at Mt. Si- nai in 1968, I simply wrote on the black- board. In 1985, we started using over- head projectors, and about five years later, PowerPoint came out. There have been many changes with which to contend. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry right now? I see that West Virginia University has canceled classes for the rest of the semester in response to COVID-19 — they are going to do it all online. The problem in West Virginia is that not everybody has a computer or internet access at home. There are so many things now that come in smaller packages — we keep pushing the limits of how small we can make things. This has benefits and consequences. As a small company, we see some of those consequences when it comes to re-workability. What excites you the most about your industry? The continuation of making technology accessible to people, and making it user-friendly. Also, being able to provide services to a wide range of people and continuously pushing the boundaries of our field. Technology and electronic components change so quickly that we often find better solutions within a short time because parts just keep getting better and better — we’re able to do so many more things than we first thought possible because the technology keeps advancing.
