I started teaching 20 years ago and have seen a lot of changes. If one remains too rigid and steadfast in their assumptions about teaching and learning, they are not going to last five years. For my part, I found the best approach is if I can’t an- ticipate a change, I must at least be open to the change without sacrificing my principles. How do you feel your industry has changed/evolved over time? We are working with a cohort of incoming students who have never been less prepared for a higher education. On top of that, the space of our classroom environments have changed remarkably. We now have a wider age gap in each classroom environment. What excites you the most about your industry? I feel joy when I see engaged stu- dents who get excited about what we are working on. I always received good reactions from students in evaluations. I found great satisfaction in teaching, but then again, I didn’t have an overload of courses to teach because professors had what was then a reduced teaching load. How do you feel your industry has changed/evolved over time? We used to have very low tuition. At Berkeley, it was $100 per semester, and that was when I was an undergrad student. Our tuition is so high now. If you want to go to an Ivy League school, you are paying over $50,000 per year in tuition only. Cost has changed higher education so much. We operate in a state that experiences many disruptions, from hurricanes to the current pandemic. The fact that we have great relationships with man- ufacturers, distributors, and lending institutions has really helped us get through the disruptions we have encountered. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry right now? We are in a very competitive market. Our biggest challenge is finding good character, ethical talent to fit our culture. What excites you the most about your industry? How we positively affect the environment is very rewarding. Sav- ing families money on monthly utility bills is equally rewarding. To achieve both with one project is what makes it exciting.
