Throughout his career, Dr. Paul has received dozens of accolades for excellence in both research and teaching. Among many others, he has been presented with four University of Texas Student Engineering Council Awards, the 1989 and 1993 International Education Awards, and an Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award from the University of Texas. Moreover, Dr. Paul was recognized as the winner of the American Chemical Society’s Doolitte, Phillips, and E.V. Murphree Awards. Dr. Paul considers teaching to be his true calling, and describes himself as having “no chance of slowing down” in his academic duties. He looks forward to the continuation of his water purification research, particularly his experimental work in electrical dialysis. As one of the preeminent voices in his specialty, Dr. Paul is a fellow of the American Institute of Chemical Engineers and the North American Membrane Society, and a member of the National Academy of Engineering, the American Chemical Society, the National Materials Advisory Board, and the Fiber Society. How have you navigated disruptions in your industry to remain a top professional? I’ve just worked hard. What are two key behaviors/personality traits that allow you to be effective in your role? I have been a student in the past, which means that I learned material and applied it correctly. I just stick with a plan and I am persistent. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry right now? Obtaining good research results and working on import- ant problems. How do you feel your industry has changed/evolved over time? It has gotten more sophisticated and complicated. As we go forward, we realize that things are not as simple as before. We have the ability to document things more efficiently, which has been quite a blessing. What excites you the most about your industry? The possibility of developing new things that might help people. New materials are most exciting.
