Insight_4th Edition

Fourth Edition | Marquis Who’s Who Insight 9 When I think about my trips to other countries to work with people, colleges and universities I have visited, it seems as though everywhere I went there was a plan, a wish, or something for that group. How have you navigated disruptions in your industry to remain a top professional? I had so few. I learned a lot when I was in college and grad school. For 40-something years, I was a clergy wife, which taught me how to work with everything under the sun. I have had experiences that were helpful and I haven’t had any complications—no disasters, no horrible things. I have just been greatly blessed with opportunities and I was able to complete whatever was started. When I think about my trips to other countries to work with people, colleges and universities I have visited, it seems as though everywhere I went there was a plan, a wish, or something for that group. We were always able to work together to find out how we could move forward. What are two key behaviors/personality traits that allow you to be effective in your role? Fromthe time Iwas infirst grade, Iwas givenopportunities because I was a person who was happy to help. I have been doing that since I was 5 years old. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry? Having to retire early because my husband was ill was challenging because I still had dissertation students, but I volunteered to continue because that’s what we were all working on together. I wanted to help them develop the next wonderful years of their lives. It was a great opportunity for me to be able to work with so many different individuals from different countries. To have an opportunity to work with them together. I am great about teams, but to become a team you need to respect one another. How do you feel your industry has changed/evolved? There are more and more opportunities in many different ways. No one ever gives you a piece of paper that says this is what it has to be. Learning how to be part of a team and understand how teams work is important. Teams can be people at the top of the pole and people halfway down. Fortunately, I majored in Spanish and English in college and so a great lesson has been the opportunity to work with people that speak different languages. I was able to do that for most of my career. What excites you the most about your industry? There are so many things. One thing that excites me is that it never ends, regardless of who we are, where we are, when we were, when we plan to be — there are always opportunities for things that are new and for things that could be new. You have to think about what is going on all around you. It is good for us to remain – regardless of retirement – aware of what is going on and where things are. We still have so many opportunities.
