What are two key behaviors/personality traits that allow you to be effective in your role? You have to be able to be versatile, in terms of characteristics. In real estate, everyone is trying to achieve something different, so you not only have to be a good listener, but you also have to be able to adapt to others and what they are trying to achieve. It takes a special kind of person to be able to do that. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry? Texas is very much a sellers’ market, which presents its own challenges. It can be tough for the buyers, especially when there are 20 different offers on a house. Realtors have to advise buyers the right way to help them close on the house that they want. One of the challenges for the sellers is dealing with the appraisal process. If a house isn’t appraised, the buyer might have to make up the difference. There are a lot of factors to keep in mind on both sides of the market. How do you feel your industry has changed/evolved? Technology has moved so fast. When I started, electronic signatures were not a thing — we had to upload and take our own pictures. The internet was not as big as it is now, either. I remember taking pictures and saving them on a floppy disk and uploading them to MLS, but now buyers come to you with a list of homes and you have to go through the process that way. You have to be willing to keep up with technology and change and learn new things as it evolves. I think that is where a lot of agents get stuck. What excites you the most about your industry? Buying a home can be the largest purchase in someone’s life, which is exciting in itself. I like the challenge of working with different personalities, meeting different people and being curious about what others are going through. I have always loved houses, but the human aspect of the real estate industry is so important, too.
