DR. DEBORAH ANN TURNER President, Associate Medical Director (Retired) League of Women Voters Des Moines, IA www.lwv.org/about-us/staff-leadership/deborah-turner Dr. Turner was elected as the 20th board president of the League of Women Voters in June 2020. The nonprofit organization is dedicated to encouraging voting by registering voters, providing voter information and advocating for voting rights. After obtaining a Bachelor of Science in distributed studies, such as zoology, chemistry, and psychology, from Iowa State University, Dr. Turner subsequently achieved a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Iowa and completed a fellowship in gynecologic oncology at the MD Anderson Cancer Institute in Houston, Texas. She also provided superior care as a gynecologic oncologist for more than three decades in university programs at the University of Nebraska, the University of Iowa, and the Medical College of Wisconsin. Furthermore, Dr. Turner practiced with the Genesis Medical Center, Davenport; the Mercy Cancer Center, Mason City, Iowa; and the Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines. Dr. Turner later obtained a Doctor of Juris​prudence from Drake University in Des Moines in 2007. She joined the Des Moines Metropolitan League in 2010, serving as its president from 2011 to 2015, and additionally the League of Women Voters’ Iowa Board as the state vice president from 2011 to 2015, and becoming co-president in 2015. Dr. Turner was elected to the League’s national board of directors in 2016 where she served on the Finance Committee, the Governance Committee and chaired the Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) Committee. Dr. Turner’s many honors include the Gertrude Rush Award from the National Bar Association in 2015, the Louise Noun Visionary Woman of the Year Award from Young Women’s Resource Center Des Moines in 2018, and I am very excited about new innovations, how we understand the workings of the body, and how we use immunology and our genetics to help define where medicine can go.
