20 Fifth Edition Marquis Who’s Who INSIGHT RICHARD G. BICKEL Senior Adviser Econsult Solutions Inc. Director of Planning (Retired) Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission http://marquismillennium.com/9th_Ed/201 How have you navigated disruptions in your industry to remain a top professional? When changing jobs, I would adjust to new circumstances, learn what the agency wanted to accomplish and involve myself in job-related activities. There are external factors that affect planning agencies, like market conditions and political activities, which people should learn in order to succeed. How do you feel your industry has changed/evolved? Organizations like the American Planning Association have helped my industry become more professional. It’s not just the length of one’s career that matters now — there are more standards to meet, including credential maintenance requirements through sessions at conferences and other activities. Procedures are more rigorous, especially with the increasing reliance on data processing, the internet and social media. ANDREA M. CONTIN-CHESEK Owner ProperPilates Studio Peachtree City, GA https://www.properpilatesstudio.com/ What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry? Many Pilates teachers have this hope that as soon as they finish getting certified, they will make a tremendous amount of money, but that takes years. This kind of work is very much like being a therapist and can be very draining. The more you work, the more you get paid, but finding teachers who want to work that much has always been difficult. What innovations or technologies do you feel will shape the future of your industry? The ability to be able to teach virtually is huge — it saved my business. What excites you the most about your industry? Pilates can change people. It’s about their mentality and lifestyle, and this helps them feel and move better. PETER W. CURRERI, MD Health Facility Administrator (Retired) Strategem of Alabama Inc. Spanish Fort, AL www.24-7pressrelease.com/ press-release/481541 How do you feel your industry has changed/evolved? I started at The University of Texas at San Antonio as an assistant professor and later went to the University of Washington in Seattle as an associate professor and Cornell University as a full professor. I think what changed over that period of time was the lack of interest in research. People tended to concentrate more on clinical teaching, probably because of the increased demand for clinical work as departments grew. What excites you the most about your industry? I enjoyed teaching medical students and residents and working with my colleagues in research and clinical services. I also enjoyed segmenting a department of surgery into eight divisions and building them into independent entities.
