Through insight and empathy, she has helped people to transform their pain, loss and rage into creative self-expression and the capacity for loving intimacy. Following the passing of her father when she was 10 years old, Dr. Kavaler-Adler was inspired to engage with grief work and the healing of trauma. At 24 years old, she earned a PhD in clinical psychology from the Gordon F. Derner Institute at Adelphi University in 1974, followed by a psychologist’s certification in 1975. She then went on to train as a psychoanalytic psychotherapist, supervisor and teacher of psychoanalysts. Over the course of her career, Dr. Kavaler-Adler published seven books. In six of these books, she writes about in-depth psycho-biographical studies of wellknown women artists and writers and in-depth clinical cases. These six books are “The Compulsion to Create: Women Writers and their Demon Lovers” (Routledge 1993, ORI Academic Press 2013); “The Creative Mystique: From Red Shoes Frenzy to Love and Creativity” (Routledge 1996, ORI Academic Press 2014); “Mourning, Spirituality and Psychic Change …” (Routledge 2003); “The Anatomy of Regret …” (Karnac/Routledge 2013); “The Klein-Winnicott Dialectic …” (Karnac/Routledge 2014); “Developmental Mourning, Erotic Transference, and Object Relations Psychoanalysis” (International Psychoanalytic Books, IPBooks 2022). Dr. Kavaler-Adler also published over 70 articles and has won 16 awards for her writing, including the Gradiva Award in 2004 from the National Association for the Advancement of Psychoanalysis (NAAP). Additionally, she founded the Object Relations Institute for Psychotherapy and Psychoanalysis in 1991 along with Dr. R. Weinstein, who is retired. She has served as the executive director of the psychoanalytic training institute for 32 years and serves as an active faculty member, senior supervisor and training analyst.
