How have you navigated disruptions in your industry to remain a top professional? Mostly through questioning authorities I think are wrong and not trying just to get along. In each case, there was someone else around who always respected or supported what I said. Even though I got into trouble, another person would rescue me. I consistently had better people rescuing me. That's how I ended up going to the University of Pennsylvania. Questioning authorities that I think are wrong seems key. What are two key behaviors/personality traits that allow you to be effective in your role? A sense of humor. When things are deadly serious, a touch of humor is quite important. When people smile, there’s a chance for them to open up. Humor serves me well. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry? My biggest challenge relative to business is middle management. I tend to get along with CEOs quite well – that tends not to be a problem. However, some people underneath a CEO want to be a CEO and always try to organize themselves to get promoted. By doing so, that tends to be a challenge. They are willing to do whatever it takes to be promoted, and that in itself is a challenge.
