What excites me is that physics is an area that changes – you’re not just looking at classical literature, which is fixed. DR. STEVEN M. GRIMES Physics Educator, Researcher Ohio University Athens, OH https://whoswhonewsletters. com/2023/05/10/steven-grimes-2/ Since childhood, Dr. Steven M. Grimes has been passionate about physics, engineering and learning more about the world. He first became interested in the subject while helping his father design their family home and enjoyed studying each phase of the process in depth. He earned a Bachelor of Science from Stanford University in 1963 and continued his studies at the University of Wisconsin, which awarded him a Master of Science in 1964 and a Doctor of Philosophy in 1968. Dr. Grimes pursued an additional postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Basel in Switzerland. After returning to the United States, Dr. Grimes became a fellow of the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, later becoming a staff physicist at the laboratory. He first became involved with Ohio University in 1978, serving as a visiting professor for one year, and in 1985, he returned to the school as a permanent member of the faculty. For the next 22 years, Dr. Grimes taught physics courses, served as director of the school’s Edwards Accelerator Lab and continued to research. In 2007, he stepped down from active work with the university and remains a distinguished professor emeritus of physics and astronomy. Dr. Grimes has been published extensively, contributing numerous articles to professional journals. As an expert in nuclear physics, he edited several key texts, including “Neutron-Nucleus Collisions” and “Moment Methods.” Recognizing his contributions to the specialty, the American Physical Society awarded him Distinguished Professor in 2001 and Outstanding Referee in 2008. Reflecting on his career, Dr. Grimes is grateful for the guidance from his thesis advisor, Heinz Barschall; his supervisor in Livermore, New York, John Anderson; and his parents. He feels he has yet to fully answer all the questions he has posed with his work, and he remains motivated to uncover the mysteries in his field further. In his personal time, Dr. Grimes enjoys reading, photography and hiking with his son.
