Bozeman, MT www.schurz.com Excelling in his career for more than 60 years, Mr. Schurz is currently retired, having attained the role of chairman emeritus of Schurz Communications, Inc., in 2007. Founded in 1872 as the South Bend Tribune, today Schurz Communications focuses on the technology of information sharing, and making human and geographic connections happen on a global scale. Joining the South Bend Tribune as an executive assistant in 1956, Mr. Schurz held the roles of secretary, director, associate publisher, editor, publisher, executive vice president, and president from 1970 to 1982, before the company’s name changed to Schurz Communications. He served as treasurer from 1983 to 1989 and president and chairman of the company from 1982 to 2007 before attaining emeritus status. Mr. Schurz spent the first 25 years of his career in the newspaper business with the Morning Herald and Daily Mail (now The Herald-Mail). He worked as an assistant publisher from 1960 to 1962 before holding the roles of publisher from 1962 to 1970, and editor from 1966 to 1970. Later, he transitioned to broadcasting and cable television, working as president of WDBJ Television, Inc., in Roanoke, Virginia, WAGTTelevision, Inc., in Augusta, Georgia, KY3, Inc., in Springfield, Missouri, and WASK, Inc., in Lafayette, Indiana. How have you navigated disruptions in your industry to remain a top professional? I think I managed by gathering all the information possible about disruption and its impact. We used the help of in-house staff and leveraged outside experts to provide us with information, too.
