I don’t lose my head over things. There’s an order of importance to everything and not everything is life-threatening. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry right now? Doctor Google seems to be consulted for everything. Many people don’t want to help themselves. They think there is a pill for everything. Of course, there have always been people like that, but there seem to be more these days. How do you feel your industry has changed/evolved over time? There’s a lot more duplicative paperwork even though there is more technology. What new innovations or technologies do you feel will shape the future of your industry? In cardiac surgery, we no longer have to open a chest to complete procedures. I think that’s great. Also, I just completed a one-hour CME course on telemedicine. It’s a good technology if you’re a general practitioner, but I don’t believe it is for my practice. If my patients are sick, I can’t do anything for them virtually. What excites you the most about your industry? I like solving difficult problems. In fact, I look forward to difficult problems. For one thing, I am curious. Also, I’m willing to learn and I had compassion for the kids. I cared about the students and I think most of them saw that. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry right now? Everything has changed now. The library department is thrown in with communications, so I don’t know what the library staff is learning at this point. I would suspect they are learning as little as everyone else. That is a very sarcastic answer, but I have to be honest — we are not teaching educators how to teach like they were taught in my time. They go out there and do whatever they want and have the kids read a chapter in a book. This is not teaching — that is not getting them to think about the prob- lems we’re dealing with. Unfortunately, kids aren’t being taught anything. Teachers are teaching to pass the mandated tests instead of truly teaching the subject. It seems to me that every one of the retired teachers I know feels the same way. What new innovations or technologies do you feel will shape the future of your industry? Now we have e-books, which the kids are allowed to bring to school. In fact, sometimes an e-book is the student’s actual textbook. This helps to literally lighten the load on students. What excites you the most about your industry? Working with students on a difficult question and seeing the answer finally appear before them. It’s the lightbulb moment, and you can see it in their eyes and their behavior because they’re excited about their own accomplishment. To me, that always made the day.
