It is a wonderful way to look at your future, because you are fearless about facing what can happen. This belief became foundational to everything I’ve worked on and helped me see every shift as an opportunity to improve and, in many cases, increase our profit or impact. What is the most important issue/challenge you are dealing with in your industry right now? I have been working in education for over 40 years and this field is chronically changing. Every country, every city and every district has its own methodology for teaching students. There are so many ways to approach a lesson. In my opinion, the most important skills a teacher can possess are tolerance, the ability to adapt quickly, and dedication to different learning styles. Further, though, entrepreneurship and ownership are incredibly important skills for everyone to learn. Entrepreneurship is the perfect context for teaching any lesson or skill — from math to written communication, from empathy and listening to “If our schools don't answer to public opinion, it is hard to imagine how they can instill critical thinking and debate skills in our students. ” presentation skills. Teaching someone how to own and run a business is teaching them a skill they can use anywhere, anytime, no matter what circumstances life presents. How do you feel your industry has changed/ evolved over time? Education today is a monopoly beyond anything George Orwell or Ray Bradbury could have ever imagined. With little competition between them, most schools answer only to standards. They often teach ideas with which many parents would not agree, and are closed to new ideas, new ways of thinking, and non-traditional learning styles. If our schools don’t answer to public opinion, it is hard to imagine how they can instill critical thinking and debate skills in our students. My worry is that these factors will have an impact on the macro, chipping away at some of our social norms, freedoms and liberties. What new innovations or technologies do you feel will shape the future of your industry? First of all, technological innovations are already freeing up an individual’s time for both teaching and learning. Students and teachers can connect over platforms like Skype and Zoom from anywhere in the world, at a time that suits them. With this small change, the breadth and depth of learning expands. Secondly, technology promises to keep reducing the enormous amount of paperwork we were weighed down with just one generation ago. What excites you the most about your industry? The most exciting thing about education is also the scariest: the sheer impact the exchange of knowledge can have. Today, with innovative technologies, new networks of learning, and greater democracy of learning, the world has never been better poised to learn more, more quickly and more easily.
